Man injured in fuel barge explosion brought to Male

Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital stated that one of the men injured in an explosion on a fuel barge Sunday night has been brought to capital Male for further treatment.

According to the hospital, 60 percent of the Sri Lankan national's body was burnt in the incident. He was brought to Male via sea ambulance.

The hospital's acting information officer Sheela Ibrahim said that although his body was badly burnt, the expat was not in critical condition.

Along with the Sri Lankan, a local crewmember of the vessel which was operated by The Hawks Pvt Ltd, was burnt in the explosion. A council member of Ungoofaaru told local newspaper Mihaaru that it was believed something exploded while the crew was trying to turn off the fuel pump. Since the boat’s structure is made from metal and fibre, the vessel could still be salvaged, the councillor added.

The Maldivian was not badly injured. He was treated and discharged on Sunday night.

The Sri Lankan man is currently being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial hospital.
