Two men were severely burnt Sunday night during an explosion that occurred on a fuel barge in Ungoofaaru, Raa atoll.
The two men – a local and a Sri Lankan national – were crewmembers of the vessel operated by The Hawks Pvt Ltd.
They are currently being treated at the Ungoofaaru Hospital.
The pictures taken after the incident showed one man, who had suffered traumatic burns on his back, arms and legs.
An official from the Ungoofaaru Hospital said that they are being treated at the hospital’s emergency room; he had not revealed any further details.
A councillor from Ungoofaaru told Mihaaru that he believes something exploded while the crew was trying to turn off the fuel pump. Since the boat’s structure is made from metal and fibre, the vessel could still be salvaged, the councillor added.
