Local Government Authority (LGA) has started an investigation into the Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) councillors who were leading the party's presidential primary.
MDP held their primary despite a court order to stop polling, upon Elections Commission request.
LGA stated they have received information about some councillors who took part in taking votes for the primary.
Letters have been sent to some of the councillors regarding this issue.
According to the letter sent to the council in Dhevadhoo, Gaafu Alif atoll, LGA revealed that it had received information that council leaders disregarded the court order to stop the MDP primary, by actively participating in vote collection.
LGA had requested for information on how the incident took place from the council.
MDP held its primary with former President Mohamed Nasheed as its sole candidate. EC had declared that Nasheed cannot take part as he was convicted of criminal charges, and has a sentence of 13 years.
