The hearing for charges of obstruction of justice levied against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed of the Supreme Court, was cancelled Thursday.

The former president and justices, who were arrested early February under accusations of attempting a coup, are charged with refusing to hand over their mobile phones to the police for investigation. Their hearing scheduled for Thursday was for the defence and prosecution to submit evidence for the case.

While the Criminal Court had cancelled some of the earlier hearings as well, it did not reveal the reason for calling off Thursday's hearing.

Meanwhile the top court justices have been convicted of influencing the judiciary, and sentenced to a year, six months and six days in jail. Their appeal case commenced at the High Court on Thursday.

In addition to obstruction of justice, former President Maumoon is also charged with terrorism, as are Saeed and Hameed. The two judges are also indicted for accepting bribes.

Should they be found guilty of terrorism, the former president and justices would face an incarceration period of 17 years.

Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed is also facing another jail sentence of four months and 24 days over obstructing the functioning of the state, after the Criminal Court found him guilty of ordering to shut down the Supreme Court's Government E-Letter Management System (GEMS) after the court issued its landmark ruling on February 1 to free political prisoners.
