A mild tremor was reported in Lhaviyani atoll early Tuesday morning, Maldives Meteorological Centre has said.
The meteorological centre said that Hinnavaru, Maafilaa Fushi and some resorts in the atoll reported feeling the tremor between 6:30 a.m. and 6:45 a.m.
A man from Hinnavaru reported feeling the tremors for four seconds around 6:40 a.m.
“I was standing in front of my door when I felt it. I saw the houses move slightly too; I was very scared,” the man recalled.
The meteorological centre said that there was no earthquake detected from its system. The tremor could have originated from the sea in that specific area, the office said.
“This isn’t very common in the Maldives. We’re investigating this now,” an official from the meteorological centre said.
A few years back, similar tremors were detected in Shaviyani atoll.
