According the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO), the total waste produced in Male’ during previous months amounted to between 70 - 75 tonnes daily.

However, the company stated that since the beginning of the Ramadan month, the amount of waste produced daily has increased to between 120 - 140 tonnes.

A spokesperson from WAMCO said that a large quantity of the waste consisted of perishable items, as well as timber, concrete and saw dust from construction sites.

“We typically collect two bags from a single household, but we are now collecting up to four or even six bags of waste every day ” said the WAMCO official.

This is the first Ramadan since WAMCO commenced its services. On the first of Ramadan, the company was not able to collect waste from many locations, leading to mass accumulation of rubbish throughout the city and its streets.

Meanwhile, issues concerning the disposal and management of waste in Male’ and in Maldives continue to rise.

In answer to the current dilemma, WAMCO has increased the time allocated for waste collection during this Ramadan period as well.

According to a recent statement delivered by the company’s media officials, they have now resumed regularly collecting waste.
