Islamic ministry begins collecting Fitr Zakat

Ministry of Islamic Affairs, on Sunday, began collecting Fitr Zakat for the year.

The ministry’s notice states that Fitr Zakat will be collected every day from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the ministry in the capital city Male, the community centre in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale, the housing units in Villimale and at councils in all other islands across the archipelago.

The notice further states that customers of telecom companies, Ooredoo and Dhiraagu, will be able to pay their Zakat via their mobiles. Bank of Maldives Ltd (BML) and Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) have also provided a platform for the payment of Fitr Zakat.

The amount of Zakat given is 2.4 kilogram of grains per person. Islamic ministry revealed that Maldivians must pay Zakat from the grains used in their household.

A total of 16,205 people registered as recipients of Fitr Zakat last year, out of which 3,142 people were of the Male region.

Islamic ministry collected over MVR 4.4 million as Zakat from only the Male region last year.

Zakat al-Fitr is charity given to the poor at the end of the fasting in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
