Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's lawyer Mohamed Faisal expressed concerns over his client not getting proper treatment after his health deteriorated this last weekend.
Maumoon was arrested under the State of Emergency declared in early February and has been charged with terrorism. He has been detained until the end of his trial.
According to his family and lawyers, Maumoon has been diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and has been seeking treatment since last December. Doctors have advised not to keep him in isolation since the diagnosis.
Faisal stated that keeping a prison officer with Maumoon was not a solution, and that he needed his family to be with him at this crucial time.
Requests to change Maumoon to house arrest has been denied by the authorities, stating that the former present could pose a possible threat to the community and tamper with evidence related to his case.
