After facing brutal cuts in the first two seasons of “Maldivian Idol”, Aishath Azal Zahir finally claimed the coveted title in the Season 3 finale late on Saturday night.

The singer from Feydhoo of southernmost Addu Atoll is the second female contestant to win the largest reality franchise show currently produced in the Maldives.

She had previously auditioned for the first two seasons but was cut at the Theatre Round. The title winner of the first season in 2015 was Laisha Junaid, while Thasneem “Bob” Ahmed was the victor of the second.

Along with Azal, four other contestants had qualified for the final round, a novel move for the franchise that had raised eyebrows across the Maldives. Coming in second and third behind Azal were Aminath Saina Mohamed Rasheed and Mariyam Maeesha respectively, marking the first time three female contestants had made the Top Three. Bringing up the rear in fourth and fifth place were Thasleem Abdul Kareem and Naushad Abdul Latheef.

The winner’s trophy was awarded to Azal by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim.
