The High Court has reversed the verdict of former Commissioner of Police and Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz, finding him guilty of obstructing the duties of legal officials.
In March 2017, Riyaz was summoned to the police for questioning and his phone was seized under a warrant to check its contents. Riyaz had refused to divulge the pass code of his phone to the police. When the case was filed at the Criminal Court, the verdict had come in favour of Riyaz.
However, as the High Court's verdict finds him guilty after the appeal, there will be an additionnal hearing later Tuesday to decide on a penalty.
Riyaz is among the lawmakers who are charged with orchestrating a plot to overthrow the government in February and he is remanded for the duration of his trial.
