Over a kilogram of drugs were seized in two drug busts last week, announced Maldives Police Service.

In a press conference held Sunday, the acting head of the police's Drug Enforce Department, Rajnee Shuaib, revealed that the first bust was a raid on a house in Maafannu ward of capital Male under suspicion that a group was smuggling and dealing drugs to Male and Raa Atoll's Inguraidhoo from there.

Police had found and seized half a kilogram of drugs with a market value of MVR 500,000 during the first operation.

Rajnee disclosed that the police had also raided other spots in Male and two houses in Inguraidhoo Island, where more drugs and packaging equipment were found.

Seven people from Male and Inguraidhoo have been arrested over the case and they remain in custody. According to Rajnee, some of the suspects have past criminal records.

"We shall forward this case to the Prosecutor General's Office at the first possible chance for indictment."

The second bust in Sosun Magu also led to the discovery of another half kilogram of drugs. The police have arrested four people in connection to the case.

Rajnee stated that the second investigation was also ongoing.
