Maldives Correctional Services has decided to allow daily lawyer visits to detainees under their care.

According to Corrections, these changes were brought about after several lawyers complained and raised concerns.

The statement in their website stated that they would no longer follow through the policy of allowing meetings on specific days of the week, and that meetings would be arranged as per the requesting order.

Each detainee will be allowed one meeting per day with maximum two lawyers. Those in Maafushi Prison will be allowed two hours and while inmates in Male Prison will receive one hour.

Lawyers had accused Corrections of not allowing meetings with some political detainees and have been voicing concerns over the issue.

Once a lawyer requests to meet a detainee, he or she is registered as their lawyer.
