The eight police officers who were arrested under the state of emergency declared by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in early February have appealed their remands at the High Court.

The Criminal Court remanded the officers for a period of nine days.

The officers’ lawyer Mahfooz Saeed stated that the officers’ heads were shaved against their consent prior to their remand hearing, noting it was against the Anti Torture Act.

Mahfooz further said that the decision to appeal the remand was made after the Criminal Court failed to review the torture on the officers at the remand hearing.

The police officers were ousted from the force soon after their arrest in the February-March period. They are currently detained by Maldives Correctional Services at Maafushi Prison.
