Electoral watchdog meets Police over upcoming elections

Elections Commission (EC) has met with Maldives Police Service over security for the upcoming presidential elections.

According to EC member Ahmed Akram, discussions with the police included security in the polling stations and transportation of ballot boxes.

Elections Commission along with the police, Anti-Corruption Commission, Human Rights Commission and Broadcasting Commission are working on the elections advocacy campaign.

The first round of the presidential elections has been slated for September this year and the EC has stated that applications for presidential candidates will be announced coming July.

Article 110 of the Constitution states that the elections for the office of President shall be held within 120 to 30 days prior to the expiry of the existing presidential term. The current presidential term will expire 120 days following July 14.
