The Elections Commission (EC) has confirmed the placement of ballot boxes in Bangalore, India as an additional location for the Presidential Elections slated for September this year.

Speaking during a local media TV show, EC member Ahmed Akram stated that the decision had come in considering the number of Maldivians residing in Bangalore.

Akram stated that ballot boxes will be set up in any other locations with registration of over 200 voters, adding that the commission will also set up ballot boxes in resorts and industrial islands with over 100 registered voters.

During last year's presidential elections, the locations for the ballot boxes were Trivandrum and New Delhi of India, Colombo of Sri Lanka, Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia, Singapore and the UK.

EC is currently holding training sessions for its’ employees in preparation for the upcoming elections.

The opposition had earlier raised questions about the integrity of the commission and its capacity to hold fair elections. EC, however, had rebutted the claims and assured that the upcoming election will be held in accordance with the Maldives’ electoral laws and guaranteed that it will maintain transparency throughout the election.
