United Arab Emirates (UAE) has decided to open an embassy in the Maldives.

According to some news outlets in UAE, the decision was made after discussions in their cabinet. UAE’s cabinet will aid in opening the embassy in the Maldives.

There has been continued goodwill between the current Maldivian government and UAE, with the latter investing in various development projects of the island nation. President Abdulla Yameen had visited UAE in October 2017 and discussed the projects with its leaders.

Projects for which the UAE has provided aid include upgrading the domestic airport in Noonu Atoll's Maafaru to an international airport, along with developing digital schools in the atoll and establishing the area as a top tourism zone.

UAE and the Maldives established bilateral relations in 1978.
