Health Minister Abdulla Nazim has said that President Yameen Abdul Gayoom introduced over 400 doctors and 600 nurses to the health sector of Maldives, after the beginning of his presidential term in 2013.
Speaking during the World Health Day celebrations, Nazim highlighted on the developments made to the health sector by President Yameen and said that the expenditure on health has increased by 130 percent in the past four years of the presidential term.
The health minister also noted that 96 percent of child birth in the Maldives take place in fully equipped hospitals with qualified doctors and that 99 percent these infants are vaccinated.
Nazim also revealed that the ministry is working to establish upgraded health centres across the atolls, including the first 100-bed tertiary hospital in Addu City. The minister further added that 190 students have been sent abroad to complete their MBBS and noted that the medical college in Maldives will be established this year.
