The suspended deputy mayor of Addu City Council, Mohamed Yasrif, on Thursday filed at the High Court to overturn Local Government Authority (LGA)’s recent suspension of various councilors.
In addition to lifting the suspensions, Yasrif also appealed the court to annul LGA’s policy on suspending councils or their members, and to investigate the LGA members that decided to take action against councilors.
Speaking to Mihaaru afterwards, Yasrif, who was suspended last month, declared that actions cannot be taken against democratically elected councilors under the same policies as political coordinators.
The High Court is yet to accept the case.
LGA had suspended councilors that issued press statements calling on the government to enforce the Supreme Court’s shocking ruling of February 1 to free nine high profile political prisoners. The suspended councilors include four members of Addu City Council, and some members of Gaafu Dhaal Atoll’s Gahdhoo council and Baa Atoll’s Hithaadhoo council.
