Maldives Broadcom fines SanguTV MVR 100,000

Local news channel Sangu Tv has been fined by MVR 100,000 which they are required pay within a month’s period.

The news channel was fined after airing a program during which MP Mohamed Musthafa spoke critically of President Abdulla Yameen. Another local news channel, Rajje Tv, was also fined after MP Musthafa made similar comments on one of their broadcasted programs.

According to a statement delivered by the Broadcast Commission, on December 8, 2017 Musthafa made defamatory remarks and used profanity in his comments regarding the President during a live broadcast.

The Commission also stated that the broadcast violated the anti-defamation laws and freedom of expression and demanded that Sangu TV issue a formal apology for airing content in violation of their guidelines.
