Former police commissioner and Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz has been accused of orchestrating a coup against the government, according to his lawyer Nooru Salaam.

Riyaz was arrested from an opposition protest calling to release the opposition's political leaders as per the Supreme Court's landmark ruling of February 1. His lawyers stated that he is also being accused of leading the protests and bringing people out onto the streets.

The police had revealed the accusations against Riyaz and questioned him only 12 days after his arrest, according to Nooru Salaam. The lawyer added that Riyaz has denied all the allegations against him and claimed that he took part in a peaceful gathering. Riyaz had also said that since the protest was against President Abdulla Yameen’s "unlawful governing", under the Constitution it was his right to participate in the rally.

In addition to Riyaz, MP Abdul Latheef and MP Abdulla Shahid were arrested from the same rally. They have since been released.
