Former lawmaker Ilyas Labeeb, former Elections Commission member Ahmed Shahid and Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) national council member Hassan Ahmed have been arrested after the police raided MDP’s main hub on Thursday morning.
MDP’s secretary general Anas Abdul Sattar claimed that the police raided the hub while a party gathering was underway, and arrested the three under the ongoing State of Emergency. However, it is not yet clear what they are being charged with.
The opposition claims that while over 100 people have been arrested under the SOE including several members of MDP's national council, over 30 people still remain in custody.
Lawyers have also claimed that the SOE was declared in violation of the Constitution, and thus all arrests made under SOE were also unlawful.
