Former state-owned utilities company Fenaka Corporation Managing Director Ahmed Shareef has been appointed as the President of the Elections Commission (EC).

During a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Tuesday afternoon, President Abdulla Yameen handed Shareef his letter of appointment.

Currently, there are four members in addition to Shareef in the EC, which includes; Amjadh Musthafa, Ismail Habeeb, Mohamed Shakeel and Ahmed Akram.

Shareef was appointed after getting the majority votes from 33 lawmakers who voted during the parliament sitting Tuesday morning. He had gotten a score of 77.3 from the parliamentary Committee for Independent Institutions as well.

In a press conference after his appointment, Shareef assured that, even though his public speeches had been inclined towards a certain thinking, his work in the EC would be neutral and unbiased.

Shareef had worked in Maldives' education field and was a principal in local schools for many years, until he was elected as the MP for Thimarafushi constituency.
