The protestors, and two lawmakers who were arrested from Friday evening’s opposition rally were released from custody late Friday night.

Madduvari MP Mohamed Ameeth and Thinadhoo-South MP Abdullah Mohamed were the two lawmakers who were arrested from Friday’s rally.

However, Galolhu-South MP Ahmed Mahloof who was arrested late Thursday night is still in custody at the Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre. He often leads the opposition rallies, and had distributed snorkelling masks to the protestors on Thursday as protection from the pepper-spray used by the riot police to disperse the crowds.

MP Mahloof's family had expressed concern as they have not been able to reach him since he was arrested.

The opposition has been hosting a series of protests, calling the government to bring an end to the alleged unlawful state of emergency and to enforce the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on February 1 that freed nine political prisoners and reinstated 12 parliamentarians who were unseated for floor-crossing. They also claim that the Supreme Court is under siege and that the police and military are being controlled by President Abdulla Yameen.
