Galolhu South MP Ahmed Mahloof was arrested again late Thursday after the police broke up the opposition gathering that commenced in front of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s hub in capital Male.

Mahloof, who was one of the leaders of the gathering, was arrested inside MDP’s hub. The opposition lawmaker had earlier passed out face masks to the participants of the protest.

As usual, the police had used pepper spray again to disperse the crowd. The protest was broadcasted live on television, including instances of police officers using force to break up the gathering.

Members and supporters of the opposition have been holding regular protests since the Supreme Court’s shock ruling on February 1. They continue to call on the government to enforce the top court’s initial verdict to release political prisoners and reinstate unseated legislators, as well as to lift the ongoing state of emergency.
