Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom’s lawyers have raised concerns as they have not gotten an update on his condition since he was shifted to Maafushi Prison.

Hussain Shameen, who is on Gayyoom’s team of lawyers, said that the last time they were able to contact him was on Friday and since then, they have not been allowed to call or meet him. He said that when they tired to meet Gayyoom on Sunday, Maldives Correctional Services had informed that they cannot allow any meetings.

In addition to this, Shameen said that the authorities had denied his family to meet him or send him a change of clothes. Maumoon Hameed, another one of Gayyoom’s lawyers said “by law, this constitutes torture.”

Gayyoom’s daughter Yumna Maumoon had also tweeted, expressing her concerns: "very concerned that Maldives Correction is not even accepting forms for lawyer visits and family visits for Gayyoom saying that State of Emergency is in effect."

Gayyoom has been accused of bribery, conspiring to stage a coup against government and attempting to create disruptions within the Maldives security forces.

Besides from Gayyoom, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla, both who are serving their sentences in Maafushi Prision, have not been allowed to meet with their lawyers.
