The United Nations Security council is to hold a meeting regarding the current political situation in the Maldives.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), diplomats have confirmed the meeting being held after the Maldivian government announced a state of emergency and arrested Supreme Court Judges Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Ali Hameed Tuesday. AFP added that it is a closed-door meeting and that UN’s political affairs is due to submit a report on the current situation in Maldives.

The Supreme Court ruled on February 1 to release nine high-profile politicians from prison and reinstated 12 lawmakers that were unseated from the parliament for floor crossing. The state had not followed through with the apex court's order and went on to two Supreme Court judges and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.

The police allege that Judges Abdulla Saeed and Ali Hameed had taken bribes and were aiding in an attempt to overthrow the government.

The UN meeting is being held after its Secretary general António Guterres had called on the Maldivian government to follow the top court’s order and to revoke the state of emergency.
