Police arrested three members of Supreme Court judge Ali Hameed’s family Wednesday.

According to a family member, police had taken a younger sibling of Ali Hameed’s wife under custody late Tuesday, before arresting another of her younger siblings and their spouse on Wednesday.

Police had also raided their residences and seized a laptop from one on Tuesday night.

Following the Supreme Court’s unprecedented ruling to free political prisoners last Thursday night, President Abdulla Yameen had declared a 15-day state of emergency late Monday and curbed the powers of the Supreme Court before ordering the arrest of Hameed, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judicial Administrator Hassan Saeed. They were taken under police custody on charges of bribery involved in purchasing flats from reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.

After the arrests, the president had lifted the restriction curtailing the authority of the top court, and the remaining three judges of the Supreme Court issued a new unanimous ruling on Tuesday night annulling the previous order to free the political prisoners.

Ali Hameed, however, was rushed to the hospital early Wednesday. Mihaaru understands that he suffers from a cardiac problem.
