Velana International Airport’s runway was abruptly closed on Sunday afternoon for repairs.
According to the main airport’s operator, Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL), the close down was only temporary in order to complete some renovations.
The runway was closed for only larger airbuses while domestic flights were allowed to land, MACL revealed.
Mihaaru understands that three flights were in circular holding position above the airport until the runway was opened again while another flight was diverted to neighbouring Sri lanka.
