President Abdulla Yameen on Friday conveyed his greetings to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India on the occasion of India's 69th Republic Day.

In the special message, he acknowledged the strong friendship between the Maldives and India, and stated that both nations would work together as they have done before, to maintain peace, stability and prosperity in both countries. He added that mutual respect should remain among the countries for democracy and internal affairs.

President Yameen wished the people of India prosperity and development on the auspicious occasion. He also expressed hopes that the Maldives' long-lasting relationship with India would continue to grow and prosper.

The Maldivian foreign minister along with senior officials from the foreign ministry had traveled to India earlier this month as a special envoy of the Maldivian president, to allegedly repair the deteriorating relationship between the countries. According to the Indian media, a rift had occurred between both countries after the Maldives signed the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China.

The government of the Maldives asserts that the FTA would not hinder the relationship between the Maldives and India, and that all was well. In addition, Yameen had revealed that work is underway to come to a similar agreement with India.
