A 20-year-old male from Maakurathu in Raa atoll who was snorkelling, passed away on Saturday morning after a passing dinghy struck him.
According to the public relations officer of Raa Atoll Regional Hospital, Abdul Azeez Hassan, who is a native of the island, was already dead when he was brought to the hospital. However, there were no evident injuries outside his body, he said.
The island council’s president Hassan Ali said that Azeez Hassan was snorkelling by himself near the island’s entry channel when the incident occurred.
“It’s too early to say anything for sure, but I think the dinghy might’ve hit him when he came up for air,” Ali said.
The dinghy also belonged to a native of the island, and the police are currently investigating the death further, he added.
The deceased was prominent at catching lobsters and made a living off selling them, the island’s council reported.
