Kaafu Atoll Council on Wednesday suspended the three councillors of Maafushi island in connection to an issue being investigated against the latter.
In a letter signed by Kaafu Atoll Council’s assistant director Aminath Arshi, the council stated that it was looking into an issue related to the members of Maafushi Island Council, and ordered the councilors to stay at home until the end of the probe.
Maafushi Island Council is comprised of a member of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives, a member of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, and an independently elected member.
According to Kaafu Atoll Council, operations of Maafushi Island Council are to be taken over by the permanent secretary until the end of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the members of Gaafu Alif Atoll Council have also been suspended since last month after they met with a foreign ambassador without prior permission from authorities.
