Former principal of Arabiyya School, Nasrullah Musthafa, has filed a lawsuit for defamation against five journalists of daily newspaper, Mihaaru, and local media group VMedia.
The defamation lawsuits were over local reports published by Mihaaru and VMedia, regarding Nasrullah’s case where he was accused of illegally sending four individuals on Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia last year.
While the court had released him a day after he was arrested, the state has since officially levied charges against Nasrullah.
The first hearing of Nasrullah’s defamation case is scheduled for coming Tuesday.
The four Maldivians sent on Hajj last year had been left unattended on arrival without anyone to receive them. They were eventually taken under the care of the Hajj Corporation, after which the Hajj Mission alleged that Nasrullah Musthafa had sent them.
