Bangladeshi police have launched another investigation into the death Raudha Athif, the Maldivian medical student and model who was found dead in her hostel room in Bangladesh last year.

According to The Daily Star news website, Bangladesh’s Police Bureau of Investigation commenced the new probe under a court order, which was issued late last December.

The police had earlier closed the case as suicide, stating that Raudha had killed herself over problems with her lover.

Raudha Athif was found “hanging” from the ceiling of her hostel room at Islami Bank Medical College and Hospital on March 29 last year. While the initial autopsy had declared it suicide, Raudha’s family had objected, insisting there were suspicions surrounding her death. They had filed a murder case, prompting authorities to exhume her body and conduct a second autopsy.

Raudha’s father had also objected to the results of the police investigation, declaring them unreliable. He had requested the court to reject the police’s submissions.

Meanwhile, the police had stated that the information they gained from Raudha’s mobile phone, laptop and other sources all tied in with the autopsy result which deemed her death a suicide. Police had maintained that Raudha had committed suicide amidst problems with her lover, a Maldivian studying in the UK.
