Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have heightened former President Maumoon Abul Gayoom’s security after receiving threat reports.

A close personnel of Maumoon told Mihaaru that security had been increased since Monday night at Endherimaage house in capital Male where he currently lives. He added that MNDF officers would be patrolling around the clock.

The informant said that they were informed by MNDF that reports were received of threats to Maumoon. MNDF are yet to make any comments on the issue.

Some of the opposition members claim that it was a plot to monitor the people who "come and go" from the former president's residence, and that there were no other motives behind the development..

The former president’s security was decreased last year March after MNDF had recommended him to refrain from travelling. The two security officers who were appointed to travel with Maumoon had been ordered to return from Velana International Airport despite the fact that they had completed their check-in process.

Tensions had peaked after Maumoon had expressed his disapproval towards his half-brother, President Abdulla Yameen’s ruling. Maumoon is currently working with the opposition coalition to bring a single candidate in order to defeat Yameen in this year's Presidential Elections.
