The state has charged jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb with two counts of bribery.

The charges sent to the Criminal Court allege that Adheeb had bribed two policemen working with the police intelligence to get access to intelligence reports, while he was serving in the government.

The two new charges against Adheeb include bribery and the misuse of government information or authority to obtain a benefit.

If the bribery charge is proven, Adheeb would receive an additional jail sentence of three years, two months and 12 days. The other charge carries a jail sentence of one year, seven months and six days.

Adheeb is already serving a jail sentence of 33 years after he was convicted on three charges. He would face the new charges while he has other ongoing cases in court, which include nine charges for misuse of official authority, a charge for terrorism and a charge on criminal conspiracy to commit murder.
