The water supply in Fuvahmulah City has been cut off after contamination was detected in the supply network managed by Fenaka Corporation.
Fenaka’s Fuvahmulah branch said in a notice that the island’s water network is being cleaned using a high dose of chlorine, and warned residents that the water is not safe for use during this process.
Residents were also advised to switch off their water purifiers until the cleaning work is completed.
A resident told Mihaaru News that the water quality had been deteriorating for several days, with noticeable changes in taste and colour, though many continued using it.
“It’s been a long time since the water has been cut off at night for maintenance. But this time the issue became serious, and the supply was completely cut off around 1:00 pm. yesterday,” he said.
Many households in Fuvahmulah rely entirely on filtered supply water, and residents said the situation is especially difficult for those living in flats.
With the island’s water supply halted, shops have become crowded with people searching for bottled water.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is reportedly sending 2,000 cases of bottled water to Fuvahmulah to ease the shortage.
