Minister of Finance Ahmed Munawar has revealed that the government will digitalise all schools and students will replace their school bags with a computer tablet by next year.

Presenting the budget for the year 2018 at the parliament on Wednesday, Munawar announced that the education sector will undergo revolutionary changes in 2018. These monumental changes include the digitalisation of all schools in the country and the introduction of a new curriculum.

Munawar explained that with the completion of digitalisation of all schools, students will not have to carry heavy bags to school; instead they will carry a lighter tablet. He also assured that this resource would be available to all students across the country and estimated that it would be fully implemented by 2019.

Even though the finance minister has announced this monumental change, the Ministry of Education is yet to concur officially. However, some private schools, such as Ghiyasudeen International School, have unveiled plans to replace text books with laptops in the higher grades.

In his speech, Munawar  also revealed that the proposed budget for the coming year has allocated MVR 154 million for the digitalisation project. He also noted that the project would transform teaching, giving homework and assessing of students to a more modern platform.

According to the minister this move would help economise and cut the cost of printing text books in the future. Digital resources like smart boards are being used by many schools in the country.
