State Budget 2026: MVR 111 million allocated for MPs’ salaries and allowances

The 2026 state budget has earmarked MVR 111 million for the salaries and allowances of 93 members of parliament.

This is an increase of around MVR 2 million compared with this year’s allocation of MVR 109 million.

The budget also allocates MVR 4.1 million for the residence of the Parliament Speaker, MVR 1 million less than in 2025.

Parliament Secretariat is set to receive MVR 225 million to cover all expenses, with roughly 50 percent of that amount dedicated to MPs’ salaries and allowances.

Overall, the total budget for Parliament next year is MVR 19 million higher than this year’s MVR 206 million.

Next year’s budget sets aside MVR 61 million for Parliament’s administrative expenses and executive services; an increase of MVR 11 million and MVR 11 million for parliament activities and travel in collaboration with foreign agencies.

MVR 28 million has been allocated for legal matters and MVR 4.6 million for parliamentary media operations.

The government proposed the MVR 64.2 billion state budget for 2026 to Parliament last Thursday.
