The State has withdrawn a case concerning over a kilo of drugs found in the under-seat storage of a motorcycle.
These drugs were found in an operation carried out by Police in 2017. During the search of a residence, police found a remote key of a motorcycle. The remote had unlocked a motorcycle parked near the house, a search of which revealed 1.2 kg of cannabis in its under-seat storage. The State charged Ahmed Visam, M. Boiling Fish in this case.
In 2020, the Criminal Court acquitted Visam of cannabis trafficking charges. The State then appealed this ruling at the High Court.
However, in August this year, the State sent a letter to the High Court seeking to withdraw this case. The bench of judges came to a unanimous decision to drop the case, yesterday's High Court ruling reads.
Visam is also amongst a group of eleven individuals arrested in 2020 through a special Police operation which uncovered 61 kg of drugs. However, courts previously found him not guilty in this case as well.
The 11 individuals in this case had been arrested in an operation prompted by intelligence reports of a major drug trafficking network. As part of the operation, authorities searched the 'Irualimas' boat, used by the suspects to collect drugs, as well as four residences in Hulhumale'.
