Mihaaru shines at journalism awards

Daily newspaper Mihaaru bagged the most awards at Maldives Media Council (MMC)’s Journalism Awards for the year 2016.

Mihaaru took home five accolades at the annual event which was held at Dharubaaruge convention centre on Wednesday night.

Social category – Aasiyath Mohamed Saeed

Legal category – Muizzu Ibrahim

Sports category – Azzam Alifulhu

Politics category – Ali Naafiz

Feature category – Niumathullah Idrees

This is the second consecutive win for both Muizzu Ibrahim and Azzam Alifulhu. Aasiyath Mohamed Saeed had also previously won the award in the Business category for the year 2015.

Best Feature is a new category introduced by the MMC this year.

MMC also gave awards for the categories of Photojournalism, Video journalism and Business.

The Photojournalist award went to Fayaz Moosa of Sun Online, while Aminath Ameena of VTV won best Video Journalist and Mahil Mohamed of Sun Online took home the trophy for Business.

MMC awarded the accolade for Most Promising Journalist to Moosa Rasheed of Avas. He dedicated his award to Ahmed Rilwan, the journalist of Maldives Independent who has been missing since August 2014.

The highest accolade of the night, the Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented to Abbas Ibrahim, the founder of Aafathis newspaper and one of the pioneers of journalism in the Maldives.

Special prizes were presented to the award winning journalists, including MVR 15,000 from Bank of Maldives Ltd (BML), a one-year Internet data package from Dhiraagu, and a trip to India from the Indian High Commission.
