Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has been awarded the contract to develop housing and provide municipal services in Hanimaadhoo for residents of Hirimaradhoo, with the relocation process expected to be completed within 1.5 years.
The announcement was made during a ceremony held in Hirimaradhoo, the first designated island under the government’s regional housing initiative. HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair signed the agreement on behalf of the corporation, while Minister of Construction and Housing Dr. Abdulla Muththalib signed on behalf of the government.
Speaking at the event, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assured that every registered plot owner in Hirimaradhoo will be provided with a home in Hanimaadhoo. He stated that keys to the new homes would be handed over within a maximum of 18 months, though the full project is expected to span up to 1.5 years.
“We will complete and hand over the land and housing within 18 months at most. However, there is no compulsion—no citizen will be forced to relocate,” President Muizzu
He also announced that residents who choose to relocate will receive an allowance and additional economic benefits as part of the relocation support package.
Residents of Hirimaradhoo have long requested relocation due to a steady population decline, prompting multiple consultation meetings between the island council and the government over the years.
The Hirimaradhoo Council had previously proposed relocating residents to Kaafu Atoll, specifically Thulusdhoo, which was supported by the Thulusdhoo Council. However, the government decided in February to relocate the community to Hanimaadhoo, aligning with the majority preference of Hirimaradhoo residents.
Hirimaradhoo, in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, is the least populated of its 13 inhabited islands, with a current population of 293—157 males and 136 females. Census data shows a steady population decline since 2014.
