The island council of Gemanafushi in Gaafu Alif atoll awarded the development of 25 tonne ice plant in the island to Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) on Monday.

MIFCO’s managing director Adli Ismail and Gemanafushi Council’s chair Abdulla Shiyan signed the agreement at a ceremony held at MIFCO head office.

Adli stated that the project is in response to the request of Gemanafushi’s fishermen to president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on his visit to the island a few months ago.

“[People of] Gemanafushi are those who advance fishing and does it in a unique way. The establishment of this ice plant will take the island’s fishing to another level,” he said.

Adli added that despite the late signing of the contract, the project is currently underway and is nearly at an end.

Meanwhile, Gemanafushi Council president Shiyan revealed that the ice plant will be unveiled during the main celebrations of this year’s Fishermen’s Day.

MIFCO’s business developed manager Mohamed Shameem stated that the company is currently undertaking nine projects to establish ice plants. One of the plants have already been installed while two others are underway, he added.
