The Maldives and Sri Lanka have signed a bilateral treaty to enhance cooperation in criminal matters, marking a key milestone in judicial collaboration between the two countries.
The agreement was signed during an official ceremony held at the President’s Office today, as part of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s ongoing state visit to the Maldives. The treaty has been in development since 2011 and reflects a long-standing commitment to strengthening legal and institutional ties.

Under the agreement, both nations will extend assistance to each other in criminal matters to the widest extent possible, in accordance with their respective domestic laws. The treaty covers cooperation in the investigation and prosecution of criminal offences, including the exchange of information and evidence.
Each country will designate a Central Authority to handle matters arising under the treaty. In the Maldives, the designated authority is the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The agreement is expected to significantly enhance the ability of both countries to respond to cross-border criminal activities and promote mutual legal assistance in complex cases.
