President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that independence is a hard-won legacy built on the courage and patriotism of past generations and preserving that legacy is a shared responsibility of all Maldivians.
Speaking at the official Independence Day ceremony held this morning at Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE), President Muizzu said that while development is visibly underway across the Maldives and will continue with pace, true progress depends on character and self-improvement and not just physical transformation.
President Muizzu emphasized that meaningful national development must begin within each citizen. He said that progress will remain superficial unless Maldivians embrace their identity, honor their heritage, and prioritize Dhivehi language, Islamic faith and national values.
Marking the 60th anniversary of independence from British protection, President Muizzu expressed confidence that the country’s future can be secured if its people stand united in defence of sovereignty and commit to passing that independence onto the next generation.
“There is no substitute for national unity and no shortcut to sustaining independence. Only through sincere love for the nation can this be achieved,” President Muizzu said.
While reaffirming that the government’s priority to develop the Maldivian people, President Muizzu said that true progress must be led by the people, with external assistance only aiding locally led efforts.
He added that international partnerships must serve the interests of the Maldivian people above all.
President Muizzu urged national resolve and unity, stating that a country can only be strong when guided by shared values and patriotism.
He added that the government remains committed to its promises and will continue to work tirelessly for the advancement of the nation.
