Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has begun campaign events for local council elections, with Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and former President Mohamed Nasheed, who recently rejoined the party, taking the lead.
In the first such meeting held last night at OTP, Nasheed and Fayyaz both addressed the crowd of supporters who attended. Fayyaz said that the local council elections can be won through everyone working in tandem.

Former MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef reiterated Nasheed's comments, stating that, unlike other political parties, MDP will win the local council elections on a platform of policies that will benefit the people and with properly calculated, joyous and energetic campaign events.
"What I saw is Chairperson Fayyaz being in the lead and having started these efforts very well. God willing, we will have a clear win in the local council elections," Hassan Latheef said.
Following last night's meeting, party members expressed confidence that MDP will come to win the local council elections.
"God willing, we will win the upcoming election with a large margin. Under Faya's leadership, we are seeing us grow bigger and bigger," former RDC Managing Director Moosa Ali Manik (Mookey) said.

Last night's meeting also saw in attendance general members who had previously split from MDP and joined The Democrats when Nasheed had formed the breakaway party.
In the celebratory rally held on June 23 to mark Nasheed's return to MDP, he declared that MDP would see a significant win in the local council elections. According to Nasheed, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will only manage to win about 20 percent in these elections.
As the Local Council Elections approach, ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has also commenced campaign activities.
