The Chinese government has donated USD 22,700 (MVR 350,000) for the development of the Maldivian sports industry.

The Ambassador of China to the Maldives, Zhang Lizhong, presented the cheque to Minister of Youth and Sports, Iruthisham Adam, at a press conference held at the ministry on Tuesday.

According to Minister Iruthisham, the aid will be used to procure equipment for sports associations and sports centres in various islands. She added that the Chinese aid is another boost to fulfill President Abdulla Yameen’s vow to enhance the sports industry for the youth.

The minister further noted that a number of young Maldivian athletes have also been selected to train in China.

Speaking at the conference, Ambassador Zhang Lizhong celebrated the strengthening relations between the Maldives and China. He vowed that the Asian giant will support the Maldives in other sectors as well.

The Maldives is currently working to seek aid from other countries to further advance the sports industry, added Minister Iruthisham.
