The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has begun investigating two potential corruption cases involving the Hulhumale Hospital in the reclaimed suburb island of Hulhumale.

The graft watchdog’s deputy chair Muawiz Rasheed said that the commission began investigating the cases two months ago.

The ACC is looking in to fraudulent activities that may have taken place whilst making an agreement between the hospital and another company.

Further details were not disclosed.

The Hulhumale Hospital is run by the ‘Aasandha’ company, which is the universal healthcare insurance providers in the Maldives. Aasandha is managed in a public-private partnership with Allied Insurance Company.

Whilst Hulhumale Hospital is under investigation, the former managing director of Aasandha, Maumoon Abdul-Samad, currently serves as a deputy minister at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.

Hulhumale Hospital used to be run by the same company that was overseeing the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). However, it was moved under the Aasandha umbrella last April.

After Aasandha began managing the hospital, it has announced that it will be undergoing additional developments and refurbishments.
