President Abdulla Yameen on Wednesday appointed Mohamed Hussain Shareef as the new Ambassador of the Maldives to Sri Lanka.

Mohamed Hussain Shareef was approved for the position by the parliament late last month. The president presented the letter of appointment to the new ambassador at a ceremony held at the President’s Office early Wednesday.

Shareef had previously held the post of Ambassador to Japan since August 2016. He was nominated by President Yameen for his new position after the government dismissed the previous ambassador, Zahiya Zareer, last month for reasons yet undisclosed. She had served as the ambassador for three years.

Mohamed Hussain Shareef holds a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy and was the spokesperson of the President’s Office during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. He had also served as the Minister of Youth and Sports and as the minister of the President’s Office in the current government.
