The Civil Court on Monday ordered a Chinese construction company currently operating in the Maldives to pay MVR 480,000 in fines for damaging a taxi amidst construction.

Last December, whilst Zhongtian Construction Group was doing work at the waste managing site in capital Male, a wall fell, damaging a few cars that were parked outside the site.

Only a taxi driver, whose car was also damaged, took the matter to court. The Civil Court ruled in his favour in December and ordered the company to pay MVR 200,000 for damages caused to the car and an additional MVR 1,100 per day as compensation for not being able to carry out the taxi driver’s duties, until the company settles the fine for damaging the car in full.

The construction company had sent a letter to the police before the court verdict, acknowledging their wrong-doing and stating that it will take full responsibility.

The Civil Court’s most recent order reiterated its earlier call and urged the company to pay the sum in full as the longer it drags on, the more the company has to pay the taxi driver.
