President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated today that while the concerns being raised by youth are legitimate, they must remain vigilant to prevent their zeal and emotions from being exploited by politicians to create unrest and disorder in the country.
The President made these comments in an interview with State TV PSM before he left on his official visit to Malaysia.
He assured that this administration would remain steadfast in always ensuring justice, adding that no persons would be discriminated against. He stated that it is not his policy to treat citizens inequitably or cause them harm.
"Even in the incident that is going on now, my stance from the beginning was to find out the truth and serve justice. No one is important to me, to work to conceal them or give them special treatment," the President said.
The President said that he accepts the criticisms and concerns regarding the incident being raised by the youth. He stated that he believes that the concerns raised at the beginning of the protests are serious concerns, due to which he is working on addressing them.
He mentioned the formation of the special Presidential Commission to investigate the incident, stating that it has been vested with broad powers which will allow them to carry out their work and take necessary action.
"There is no one they cannot question, no doors they cannot knock on. Even if it comes to seeking assistance from abroad, the commission has been granted the power to do so. So they have been formed with broad powers. God willing, the findings will come, and the Police will also continue their investigation," the President said.
The President said that the investigation will provide answers to all the questions being raised by the public. He said that he has decided to form the commission as establishing rule of law and justice in the country is key.
"There is no one who has powers over me, there is no one who can influence me. It is only the citizens I have to be answerable to. I am a servant of the people. It is the citizens who voted for me and elected me. So it is not important to me to protect any person," he said.
The President said that while he is assuring the youth that their concerns will be addressed, it is important for the youth to refrain from letting others misuse their zeal to create unrest in the country.
"We can see now politicians attempting to use your enthusiasm, your emotions, to try and create unrest in the country. We can see some trying to do so. I believe that is now what the youth also wants. No one who loves justice will want that," he said.
"So don't allow any persons to create unrest and disorder in the country. That is not in the interests of any of us. It is important for all of us that the nation remains peaceful."
Large numbers of youth are conducting a series of protests calling for justice for Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who was found fallen from a building on to the roof of an adjacent warehouse. Protesters accuse the police of cover ups and discrimination, and a number of demands are being made from the government.
